Southern Apple Dumplings


  • 1 large apple (I used a Fuji- any apple will do, tart is better)
  • 1 can Pillsbury Crescent dough
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2/3 cups sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 3/4 cup or 6 oz. 7-Up or equivalent (half the can)

  1. I just made these today for a friend’s birthday and they were a big hit! Everyone loved them and asked for the recipe. I doubled the recipe size but kept the original amount of sugar to keep them from being too sweet and they turned out perfect. Thank you for sharing this recipe!

  2. What do you suggest as an alternative to Pillsbury Crescent dough? We don’t have that here in Dubai.

  5. Love this….I can’t wait to try this one. I have made this with just the apple wedges and crescent rolls with cinnamon sugar. I would cut each crescent wedge in two, sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and roll an apple wedge and bake…..great little bites and so easy. If I have time I would add a sugar icing to drizzle over….love this idea of more a turnover concept…..

  6. For the sugar, is it okay to use brown sugar? If so, does the measure need to be reduced?

  7. I’ve been wanting to try this forever and finally made it tonight. OMG, AMAZING! I had 3. I used Granny Smith apples.

      My sister makes these & she uses Mountain Dew in hers. I’m sure squirt would work equally well. Try it!

  11. Made these tonight, they were wonderful! I didn’t have 7-Up or Sprite, so I used Ginger Ale as a sub.

  13. I have made these but used Mountain Dew in place of the 7 up and they turned out great.

  14. I wish I could make this for my five year old son! He would love it but he is on a strict gluten free diet :/

    • You can but gluten free puff pastry at the supermarket.

    • There is a new brand of doughs from IMMACULATE BAKING. They have many varieties that are gluten free and they are all non-GMO. They are available in the same case as the Pillsbury doughs and they taste great.

  15. Elizabeth-pillsbury now makes a gluten free pastry dough. Its usually near the store bought cookie dough in the refrigerator section.

    I have made these alot and they are wonderful! I use Granny Smith apples and mountain dew. But should be great with your fav. apple, any lemon lime soda should work fine.

  18. Made these with Mountain Dew and used peaches instead of apples. I’ve also done it with raspberries but the peach is by far my favorite!! Delicious and super simple!!

  19. I made these for my husband and he LOVE IT! He asked me to make them for a baby shower at his work. I’ve had a few peaches that I didn’t know what recipe to make yet, but will definitely consider making this recipe w/peaches thanks for the suggestion Kalen!

  20. I have been making these for years & I use Mellow yellow, Mountain Dew or 7Up. I also make with peaches or apples . Both are awesome.

  21. Does the liquid have to be a form of soda or is there a healthier liquid that can be used? I realize that this is not a healthy recipe; however, I’d like to make it healthier! HELP!

  22. We make these and sometimes use orange juice . You could use some reduced calorie/ sugar orange juice like Tropicana Teop- 50.

  23. People like you make it hard for people like me to maintain their girlish figure (even if that figure is a mere memory) lol. These were simply delish And easy. I doubled the dumplings but the sauce I made what the recipe called for + 1/2 instead of fully doubling. The top was crisp and the bottom sweet and gooey. Oh, this is a keeper. Thanks for sharing.   24. Made these today. Omitted Mountain Dew and used organic orange juice instead. Sooooo incredible!!!! Used the cresent dough by immaculate bakery. Super yum!! Thank you for sharing!!

  26. I made these & brought them to work. Every last one was eaten. Tonight the granddaughters and I will make these again! I originally used Mountain Dew. I think I’ll try the OJ with some orange zest.

  30. It tried this today for the first time using Mountain Dew, Brown Sugar, all-spice and nutmeg. They turned out amazing!
